The Wonder of the Batteryless Torchlight
How many times have your flashlight batteries died at an inopportune moment? If the answer is anything more than never, then a batteryless flashlight could be just your thing!
Batteryless flashlight? How does that work then?
There are a couple of types. First, we'll look at the shaking type. This type of flashlight just needs a good old shake and you get bright LED light power for anything up to 30-45 minutes. Once it starts to fade, simply shake it again. The LED bulbs are said to be good for around 10,000 hours.
Be warned - the shaking batteryless flashlight uses a rather powerful magnet. This can destroy things sensitive to magnetism - read the manual carefully before using the flashlight. It may also be attracted to nearby metallic objects and stick to them quite strongly. Therefore these are best kept away from PC monitors and credit cards and are not the best flashlight to keep in a toolbox.
Another batteryless flashlight involves being squeezed. Squeezing runs a little built in dynamo generator to run the flashlight, which also uses an LED bulb. Squeezing times and how long the light lasts vary, so look around for the best option available.
Finally, there is the wind up flashlight. Again, it usually houses an LED bulb and a dynamo generator, only these have a foldaway handle on them to run the generator.
A batteryless flashlight is a very useful accessory to stick in the toolbox, in the kitchen cupboard or bedside cabinet, in the glovebox, with the camping gear... aside from being able to be charged within seconds and never having to rely on being near spare batteries or a power supply, there is the added bonus of the little-used flashlight always being available. Even if it hasn't been used since the last power outage 18 months ago, it will still work because the batteries won't have leaked all over the insides.
